Baby Elephant

Thank You for Sponsoring Bella

We would like to sincerely thank the kind hearted people who have sponsored baby Bella. As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic Karen Elephant Retirement has had no visitors since late March and the elephants have now returned to living near a remote Karen village in Mae Wang. Your sponsorship is helping to buy elephant food for baby Bella and her family during these difficult times. We greatly appreciate your kind support.

Bella, who was born on 31 October 2019, is now about 9 months old. She was born at Karen Elephant Retirement, an ethical elephant project south of Chiang Mai in northern Thailand. Since the collapse of tourism resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic there have been no visitors to Karen Elephant Retirment and so Bella, her mother, Mae Kham Pha (or Mae Kaew) have moved to live near a remote Karen village in Mae Wang.

Bella is growing up fast and is a very cute and mischievous young elephant. She is very playful and likes to run around and make funny noises. She loves to drink milk from her mother but can also eat other food including bananas that have been peeled.

Lanna loves playing in the river with her mother and also walking in the forest with the herd. While the bigger elephants forage on natural vegetation Lanna watches and learns from her elders and can now grab leaves from trees with her little trunk. She is very curious and is the center of attention. If she makes noise the whole herd will gather around her to protect her.

Ethical Elephant Project
This is a small Saddle Off project with a limited number of guests. Our model is based on ensuring the well-being of the elephants, which means no riding or other unnatural activities.
