Mae Jan Dee was born in January 1967 in the Mae Chaem District of Northern Thailand. Like many working elephants, her early life was marked by hardship, including working in the logging industry, where she hauled heavy timber from the forest. Later, she was moved to work in the tourism industry, where she carried tourists on her back using a traditional saddle for many years.

Mae Jan Dee bears several distinctive physical characteristics, including unusually small, notched ears and a shortened tail caused by an injury from a bull elephant when she was logging.

In October 2016, Mae Jan Dee arrived at the Majestic Elephant Project, finally trading a life of labor for a well-deserved retirement.

Since joining the project, Mae Jan Dee’s health and mood have steadily improved. She is an independent elephant who values her freedom and strongly dislikes being forced into routines. She happily spends her days foraging in the jungle and taking dust and mud baths. Mae Jan Dee has a deep love for water and will often seek out the river to swim and relax on her own. She also has a hearty appetite, particularly enjoying bananas, sugarcane, watermelon, banana plants, palm leaves, bamboo shoots, and rice balls.

After a lifetime of struggle and hard work, Mae Jan Dee is now enjoying a peaceful retirement and living life on her own terms.
